Tipping

Tips are common place and customary in Cyprus, for everything from table service in a restaurant to a massage. It is more often a reward for good service and for most local people, an essential means of supplementing their income, meagre by Western Standards. Often tourists to a country don't know how much to tip or who to tip. The following amounts are a guideline and based on local considerations and feedback from our past travellers:

Restaurants and taxis: In Cyprus, most restaurants include a 10% service charge in the bill, so additional tipping is not expected, though leaving a small amount for good service is appreciated. In cafés and local eateries, leaving loose change is common. Taxi fares are usually rounded up rather than tipped.

Local guides: During your trip, you may occasionally have a local guide in addition to your tour guide. Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory. If you are satisfied with the service, we suggest around €5–€10 per person per day for local guides.

Drivers:During your trip you may have different drivers. Some may be with you for a short transfer, while others may accompany the group for several days. Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory. If you are happy with the service, around €3–€5 per person per day is generally considered appropriate, with slightly higher tips for drivers accompanying the group for longer periods.

Gulet Boat Trips: If you are travelling through Southern Turkey / Türkiye on a Gulet Boat trip we suggest USD 10 per person per day for the boat staff.

Tour guide: As a guideline we suggest around USD 80 - 100 per person for the whole tour, but this is ultimately up to you.

Money

The currency used in the Republic of Cyprus is the Euro (EUR).

100 cents = 1 Euro

Banknotes: €5, €10, €20, €50, €100, €200

Coins: 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 cents and €1, €2

You should always carry some backup cash separate from the rest of your money and cards. If you lose your wallet or handbag, having some emergency cash will help cover basic expenses such as transport, food, or phone calls.

A mixture of cash and credit cards is the most convenient way to manage your money. Credit cards are widely accepted in most restaurants, cafés, shops and hotels across Cyprus.

MasterCard and Visa are the most commonly accepted cards. American Express is accepted in some larger hotels, restaurants and banks, but not everywhere. ATMs are widely available in cities and tourist areas such as Nicosia, Limassol, Larnaca, Paphos and Ayia Napa, as well as at airports and major shopping areas.

When withdrawing money, it is recommended to use ATMs attached to banks, especially during banking hours, so assistance is available if needed.

Currency exchange services are available at banks, exchange offices and airports, although withdrawing Euros directly from an ATM usually offers the most convenient rates.

It is difficult to estimate exactly how much spending money you will require. As a general guideline, €20–€40 per day should cover additional meals, drinks, small purchases and optional entrance fees. If you plan to buy souvenirs or gifts, you may wish to budget additional spending money.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is compulsory on all of our tours and needs to cover personal accident & liability, medical expenses and repatriation, travel delay & abandonment. We also strongly recommend that you take out cover against cancellation and lost/stolen baggage. Personal medical insurance does not normally provide sufficient cover and is generally not suitable for travel on our tours. You will not be able to join your tour if you have not provided us with details of your insurance or if you arrive without cover in place (no refunds will be due in this event).

General Info

Cyprus has much to offer travellers with its beautiful Mediterranean coastline, rich cultural heritage and welcoming local hospitality. The island has been shaped by many civilizations over thousands of years, including the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Lusignans, Venetians, Ottomans and the British, each leaving their mark on its architecture, culture and traditions.

Cyprus stands at the crossroads of Europe, Asia and the Middle East, giving it a fascinating blend of cultures and influences. Today, the Republic of Cyprus is a member of the European Union, combining modern European infrastructure with a long and complex historical legacy. Ancient archaeological sites, medieval churches and castles sit alongside lively modern cities and coastal resorts.

The capital city Nicosia is the last divided capital in Europe, reflecting the island’s modern political history. Despite this, Cyprus remains a welcoming and rewarding destination to explore, offering visitors a mix of historical discovery, Mediterranean landscapes and relaxed coastal lifestyle.

Cyprus is located in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea, south of Turkey and west of the Middle East. The island features mountain ranges, fertile valleys and over 600 km of coastline, with beautiful beaches and crystal-clear waters.

Largest cities: Nicosia (capital), Limassol, Larnaca and Paphos.

Geographical area: 9,251 sq km

Population: Approximately 1.2 million

International dialling code: +357

Time Zone: Cyprus follows Eastern European Time (EET), which is 2 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT +2). During daylight saving time, from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October, Cyprus is 3 hours ahead of GMT (GMT +3).

Electricity: Cyprus uses 220–240 volts AC, 50 Hz, with the British-style three-pin plug (Type G). Travellers from many European countries will require a plug adapter.

Religion and Local Customs:

The majority of Greek Cypriots belong to the Greek Orthodox Church, while other religions are also present on the island. Cyprus is generally relaxed and modern in lifestyle, particularly in tourist areas and coastal cities. When visiting churches or monasteries, modest clothing is appreciated, with shoulders and knees covered. Visitors should always respect local customs, religious sites and local regulations during their stay.
